Marcus Williamson is a campaigner and journalist, writing for the British newspaper, The Independent, primarily as an obituarist. He also writes for the English-language French newspaper French Week. Williamson is a campaigner on a number of issues including: * GM foods * Internet privacy * Nationwide Building Society * Speculative invoicing GM foods From 1998 to 2005 Williamson was the editor of the site gmfoodnews.com, which provides information about genetically modified foods. Internet privacy In April 2009 the spyware/adware company Phorm attacked privacy campaigners Marcus Williamson and Alexander Hanff, accusing Williamson of waging a "serial letter writing campaign" against the company. Williamson had received assurances from Amazon and several other companies that they would opt out from the Phorm tracking system. Nationwide Building Society In September 2010 Williamson revealed that the Nationwide Building Society CEO, Graham Beale, had closed his e-mail address because of receiving too many complaints about proposed account changes. The ensuing publicity resulted in the CEO re-opening his e-mail account a day later. Speculative invoicing In October 2010 Williamson filed a complaint with the Legal Services Ombudsman about the speculative-invoicing activities of London-based law firm, Gallant Macmillan, which sends letters demanding money from those accused of downloading copyrighted files.
