MaiYap

Biography
Mai Yap is a Chinese Panamanian artist born in the countryside village of Aguadulce, Panama in 1959. In 1968, she subsequently moved with her family to Panama City. While studying at Colegio de Nuestra Señora de Bethlem and Instituto PanAmericano, as well as at the University of Georgia in Athens, USA, her commercial illustrations were in great demand. In 1982, after obtaining a Bachelor in Arts Degree in Advertising and Graphic Design, she returned to Panama. While in her native country, she worked as a junior copywriter at McCann-Erickson and Boyd- Barcenas advertising agencies. Her stay would last only three years before she got married to an US Air Force pilot, relocating to Miami, Florida, USA, in 1985. After several years of working as a fashion designer with a thriving clothing business and later as a bakery owner, Yap plunged forward to answer her true calling. In 1992, following the birth of her only child, she dedicated her efforts to teach herself how to paint. From the beginning her unusual close-up flowers helped her to establish herself as one of the best floral painters in South Florida, which landed her a position as an art teacher at prestigious Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in 2007. She is now considered a master colorist and an expert on both the brush and the palette knife techniques. Using only palette knives, she is the first to depict South Florida’s landscape using a thick impressionistic pointillism style. Turning to abstraction in 2011, Yap gave voice to her deepest passions and concerns. These latest environmental abstracts question our beliefs and propel us to take action to preserve our planet. As an international artist, numerous collectors and art lovers around the world cherish Mai Yap bold flowers, landscapes and abstracts.
