Madslashers - Informal name for the 1st Platoon, Company C, 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment History The name "Madslashers" originates from an incident where one of its members (a Ranger named SGT (P) Pursely) nearly killed an assailant with the assailant's own knife. This event, in conjunction with another episode in 1987, where Ranger PFC Billy Redwine was apprehended smuggling illegal switchblades into the US from Germany after a training operation, led to a heated discussion between the Commander of the 2d Battalion and the Commander of Company C. The Battalion Commander admonished the Company Commander, telling him to "get a handle on his his 1st platoon," then asking the immortal question, "what are they, a bunch of Madslashers?" When the Company Commander relayed this comment to his men, rather than feeling slighted, the members of the platoon felt honored by the sobriquet, and have proudly retained it ever since. It should be noted that Company C, the parent unit of the Madslashers, is often referred to as "Criminal Company." That term originates with Company B's First Sergeant, 1SG Folino, a former Madslasher himself.
