The first ever Mad Monk race event was held in 2009 in Darley Abbey, a World Heritage village in Derbyshire. The Mad Monk was created by Steve Walker founder of aaa-adventure. The first race generated 600 competitors who had to "run, crawl, jump and swim" around an unforgiving cross country course. The event included racers from 18 to 65 and was seen by some as an athletic competition, while others did it just for the sole purpose of completion. The event involves over 60 local volunteers and is a massive undertaking for event organiser Steve Walker, see my mad week The Mad Monk 10k is an extreme obstacle race. Competitors will encounter around thirty obstacles ranging from extreme to absurd. Mad Monk 10k, Runners World Adventure Race of the Year, the Mad Monk Adventure Race will be a survival of the fittest, a physically and mentally challenging 10K cross country trail run, with obstacles and challenges designed to take you out of your comfort zone.....!
