M-quotient

One of the most popular bibliometric indexes proposed in recent times to evaluate the quality of the research of a single researcher is the h-index. However, if used in a rather automatic and obtuse way, it may convey misleading information, especially when different researchers are compared. Indeed, it is obvious that a scientist active since a long time tends to have a h-index larger than a younger researcher. To cope with such an issue it was recently proposed the so-called
m-quotient.
It is the h-index of an author divided by the numbers of years she/he has been active in the field considered. Notice that, actually, the very first paper published might not be appropriate as starting point. Indeed, it may happen that it was a minor contribution, published well before that the sceintist started to publish continuously in the field to which she/he will dedicate most of her/his efforts.
