Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr.

Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. (born January 3, 1925, in Richmond, Virginia) is a son of Lyon Gardiner Tyler and grandson of the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler by way of his second wife. He is a retired history professor and attorney.
Tyler began his career as an attorney; he got his AB from the College of William and Mary and his law degree from the University of Virginia law school. He practiced as a private attorney for 10 years and served as Commonwealth Attorney of Charles City County from 1951 to 1955. He served as Director of the Virginia Civil War Centennial Commission 1959 to 1963. He then undertook a career change and obtained a PhD in history from Duke University in 1967; his PhD dissertation was titled Civil Defense:The impact of the planning years, 1945-1950. He taught history for 20 years at the University of Richmond, Virginia Military Institute, and The Citadel.
