The Web site features local news, classifieds, business directory, press releases, restaurant directory, nightlife, weddings, calendar of events, a weekly eNewsletter and Ask Mr. Long Island, a question and answer guru for Long Island facts and information. The Web site also features an Expert area with over 75 contributing writers that discuss topics ranging from acupuncture to yoga. Longisland.com was originally created in 1996. LongIsland.com was a pioneer in creating one of the first regional search engines, with search results for Long Island based Web sites only. As the Web site grew in popularity, the business focus shifted in several directions based on visitor requests. Additional features and functionality were added to the site to cater to the Long Island, NY Internet community. With the quantity of diversified information, the Web site looked to establish its brand identity. In 1998, the official tagline Long Island's Most Popular Web Site was added to describe the unique marketing niche of the Web site. LongIsland.com coordinates the Long Island Pizza Festival & Bake-Off, a charity event that raises money to help feed the hungry on Long Island.
