The London Biggin Hill Airport Mid-air collision was a collision of two aircraft. A Bell 206 and a de Havilland Tiger Moth on 15 May 1977 that killed the one pilot and four passengers of the helicopter and the pilot of the Tiger Moth was uninjured in the collision. Accident The Bell 206 took off from London Biggin Hill Airport with the only pilot and his four passengers on board. As a de Havilland Tiger Moth was on a flight from a airfield at Stapleford Tawney he asked air traffic control if he can land downwind. The air traffic controler toll the pilot of the Tiger Moth to land on runway 03 which is a grss air strip. But as the pilot was on apporach and at 600 feet he saw a heilcopter the then heard a loud bang and a hole in the aircraft. The pilot landed the plane on runway 03. The plane collided with the Bell 206 heilcopter which took off from the airport. All off 5 on board were killed in the accident. A eyewitness took photos of the collision it showed that the main rotor of the heilcopter hit the under carrige of the Tiger Moth and caused the haiicopter to crash. Cause The Air Accidents Investigation Branch found that the heilcopter pilot failing to ensure that his proposed flight path was clear of potentiallly conflicting air traffic over which he had no right of way.
