Lodging.com, part of Cendant's Travel Distribution Services division, promoted negotiated and Galileo CRS accommodations online through own and affiliate websites. In total, their inventory consisted of over 60,000 hotels and other types of lodging. Lodging.com was established in 1995 as Travelbase, an online ski guide. Shifting to online hotel reservations in 1997, the company grew its independent brand until Cendant acquired the .com in 2002. Lodging.com is notable as an early developer of a hotel affiliate program. In these revenue-sharing programs, third-party websites resell Lodging.com hotel room inventory in exchange for a commission. Lodging.com no longer exists as an independent web site. As of July 2006, when users visit the site they are forwarded to Orbitz. |
