A Locknote speech or address is the last presentation of an academic conference or business conference. The purpose of this presentation is to wrap up the conference ideas and end the formal conference proceedings. It is therefore one of the most important items in a conference, for it is one of the few times that no competing conference sessions are held, enabling all conference participants to attend. Many people mistakenly call this a "keynote" presentation whereas typically the keynote opens the conference, hence the use of the word "key" in keynote. The lock referring to the locking of the conference using the metaphor of turning the key the other way. Typically, one of the best known conference participants presents the locknote in the hope of attracting the audience to stay to the end of the conference.
