LocalCooling is a piece of software published by Uniblue Systems. Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by modifying the power profiles of host computers to reduce power usage. Power savings are done by powering the monitor off, spinning down hard drives, and putting the system in hibernate or shutdown modes. The software also attempts to calculate power savings based on a proprietary database, and publishes member stats on their website with the gathered statistics.
Project status As of around May 2008, the LocalCooling project appears to be defunct. Although the main website is still accepting registrations, no software download links are offered and the project forums are seemingly unmoderated. Users who downloaded the software while it was available comment that the software, although still active, is unable to log in to update their power saving statistics.
