List of unsolved problems in history

This is a list of major unsolved problems in History. Most historical problems are not "unsolved" per se, but they lack a worldwide, general consensus among historians and scholars, with numerous (and often contradictory) theories being proposed. The list is organized in chronological order.
Ancient World
* what led to the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization, a remarkably advanced culture for its time?
* how did the Ancient Egypt become unified in a single nation?
* how did the Egyptians construct the pyramids?
* what is the exact location of the Land of Punt, an important Egyptian trading partner?
* what led to the end of the Minoan civilization?
* what caused the Bronze Age collapse?
* the decline and fall of the Roman Empire: a classic and controversial subject that has over 200 different theories, with historians debating whether there was any "fall" at all or a complex transformation spanning several centuries.
* Prior to the establishment of Rome. The Etruscans occupied the territory. Who were the Etruscans and where did they come from? The best theory as of now is that "they were just there."
* Greek fire, how was it made?
Middle Ages
* the Crusades: a phenomenon that is still not fully understood, particularly how they managed to gather such support throughout every social class in Europe at the time (especially the First Crusade) and how they shaped the world.
Modern Era
* the causes and legacy of the French Revolution, the event that caused the Modern Era and one of the most important events in human history, are a matter of debate.
* why did the Industrial Revolution take place in the 18th Century (when it could have happened earlier) and why did it take place in Britain and not in other countries at the time (China)?
* the causes of the First World War: why it started in 1914 and not before, who has the biggest blame in starting it; this and other questions are among the most studied in all of world history
* what caused the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression?
