American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis features a number of different late-1980s American pop culture references to films, music, and fashion of the era that are cited by the protagonist, Patrick Bateman. The following is a list compiled of the referenced works, both real and fictional. Real Films/TV shows *Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood Bateman sees someone rent a VHS of this film at a video store. *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre characters discuss this with Bateman over dinner when one mistakes the antagonist Leatherface for "Featherhead". Bateman can also be seen watching 'chainsaw dance' scene of the film while doing sit-ups *Top Gun referenced by Bateman when conversing with Tom Cruise in an elevator. *Cocktail also referenced by Bateman in the same above conversation, he mistakenly refers to the film as "Bartender". *The Toolbox Murders referenced by Bateman as a film he considers renting one evening. *Body Double a favorite film of Bateman. Fashion Restaurants Brands Fictional Films/TV shows *The Patty Winters Show is a talk show that is a parody of trendy talk shows of the time period, like The Oprah Winfrey Show, that Bateman regularly watches, and features numerous random topics from Middle Eastern restaurants to dwarfs.
