List of autological words
|
This is a list of autological words, words which describe themselves. *autological *: Autological words describe themselves, thus "autological" can with equal consistency be taken to be either autological or not autological (but not both). * drawable, pronounceable, enunciable... *: These words all derive from actions the average human being can perform. * English, terrestrial... *: Words that come from what they are describing are autological. * sensical *: The word itself makes sense. * nonelectric, nonnumerical... *: In general, any heterological word prefixed with "non-" and their synonyms. * postindustrial, post-impressionist... *: Any word that has been created after the period without the "post-" prefix. * tonic, stressed *: The phonetic meaning of both of these words express a basic feature of a word, that it is accented. * polysyllabic, pentasyllabic *: Polysyllabic is autological because the word includes more than one syllable. *cognitive, coherent, comprehensible, intelligible, understandable... *: This may depend on the way these words are expressed. *prefixed, suffixed, circumfixed *: The prefix in "prefixed" is "pre-", the suffix in "suffixed" is "-ed" and the affixes in "circumfixed" are "circum-" and "-ed". *derived *: "Derived" came from Old French, which came from Latin. *neologistic *: At least currently neologistic is a neologism, even if a widely known one. *finite *: The word finite is a finite word, it does not go on forever.
