Political career
Buchanan was first elected as a school trustee to the North Vancouver School district in 2008. She was subsequently elected as a councillor in the City of North Vancouver in 2011, and re-elected in 2014.
Buchanan announced her intention to run for Mayor in 2018, after longtime Mayor Darrell Mussatto announced his retirement. She beat out five others for the position, including former councillors Rod Clark and Guy Heywood. During the campaign, Buchanan was an advocate of a more modest proposal for the Harry Jerome redevelopment project, with costs estimated to be over $200 million. During her inaugural address, Buchanan discussed the housing crisis, social isolation, and her wish to see North Vancouver become: "the healthiest small city in the world."
She was elected Metro Vancouver vice-chair.
