Lewis Mitchell

Lewis Mitchell is the Edward Lorenz Postdoctoral Fellow in the Mathematics of Climate through the Mathematics and Climate Research Network, and postdoctoral research fellow with the Computational StoryLab at the University of Vermont. This team focuses on large-scale, system-level problems in many fields including sociology, chaos and nonlinear dynamics, networks, and physics. Lewis's background is as an applied mathematician working on data assimilation, weather and climate at the University of Sydney, Australia. Mitchell obtained his Ph.D. from University of Sydney in 2011.
Mitchell's research focuses on sentiment analysis and more broadly the interface between the “real” world and the more abstract world of mathematics. This research attempts to provide a picture of large scale factors which influence happiness.
His blog post on the "happiest street corner in NYC" also has gain significant attention and was the inspiration for his recent TEDx talk.
