Leonie McNair

Leonie McNair (born 7 August 1960) is an Australian politician, educator and currently a Liberal candidate for Bass in the next Tasmanian state election. McNair is currently the Principal of Launceston Preparatory School and was pre-selected for the Liberal Party for the seat of Bass in early 2013.
Life
McNair grew up and was educated in Launceston, Tasmania finishing her primary, secondary and tertiary education in the city. McNair studied Education at the University of Tasmania graduating in 1981. At university McNair was involved in debating and public speaking which she continued as a passion in adulthood representing Tasmania in interstate debating competitions. McNair continues the training of young speakers and currently adjudicates debates in Tasmanian secondary schools competition.
McNair has competed three times (1993, 1994, 1995) in Targa Tasmania and in 1996 she was a leading member of the media team for that year's event.
McNair is a supporter of the arts with membership in a number of organisations including the Royal Society of Tasmania, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, the National Trust of Tasmania and Theatre North.
Career
Education
McNair has worked in the field of education since graduation of her degree, spending ten years as a primary school teacher before being promoted to her current position as Principal of Launceston Preparatory School of which McNair has held the position for the past twenty years. In 1991 McNair published her own picture book for children titled "Tyler the Tasmanian Tiger" with illustrator Maurice Dawe.
McNair was selected as the Tasmanian State judge for the Children's Book Council of Australia's "Book of the Year" awards for 2005-06. Since 2006 McNair has served as a board member of the Association of Independent Schools of Tasmania.
Politics
McNair was pre-selected for the Liberal Party in the seat of Bass in early 2013 alongside current Tasmanian State Liberal Bass Parliamentarians Michael Ferguson and Peter Gutwein.
