Legend of Empires (LOE) is a computer video game that also serves as a recruitment tool developed by Emeon technologies, released in 2008. The game is designed to have two types of players. The first are CEO's who can create virtual companies and manage them. The second are investors who actively trade virtual company assets. The performance of the virtual companies depend both on the management style of the user and the real-world performance of the sector each company is affiliated with via its corresponding exchange traded fund (ETF). Although the game is inherently complex, it is designed for all levels of play from those who are novices in the business and investment realms to those who are seasoned. While novices may play for fun, savvy investors or managers may play to demonstrate their skills in hopes to be placed on the LOE "Leaderboard", where top investment banks, hedge funds, and Fortune 500 corporations actively recruit. Common gameplay elements The Legend of Empires game belongs to the real-time strategy genre. Players have the option to play as both CEO's and investors. The most interactive role in the game is that of a CEO. As a CEO, the player is allowed to develop up to five corporations. Initially, the user creates a company using points, which can be allocated to a set of 10 criterion (Dividend, R&D Spending, Profit margin, Intangible assets, etc. ) and 3 management styles (Cash vs. Debt, Growth vs. Value, and Domestic vs. International). An industry for the company must also be selected. This allows the performance of the virtual company to be directly linked to the real-world industry performance via an (ETF/index). The initial design of the company dictates the companies ratings and thus its performance, but as the game progresses, the management style along with interaction with other players, and the performance of the underlying real-world index all contribute to the performance of the company. The game recommends to begin as an investor to observe how companies are managed and perform prior to taking on the role of a CEO. However, most reviews indicate players often choose to take on both roles simultaneously, as the game is designed for all levels of play. Each investor is allotted an initial amount of capital, which he can use to purchase shares of any virtual company listed on the Legend of Empires Stock Exchange. Reviews Legend of Empires has quickly grown with players in over 30 countries worldwide. Critics have credited part of the success to the live, multi-player interaction, which allows CEO's to form alliances, and take defensive and subversive actions.
