Major Leetul Gogoi is an officer of the Indian Army who was involved in the 2017 Kashmir human shield row. Early life and education Gogoi was born in 1979 at Namrup, which is located 80km from Dibrugrah, Assam. His father, Dharmeswar Gogoi, worked in the production department of Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation. He studied in Dibrugrah and Shillong and later graduated from Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Career Gogoi joined the Indian Army at the age of 18 as a soldier and served in 3rd battalion of the Assam Regiment for 9 years. He later joined the Army Cadet College (ACC), Dehradun and was commissioned as a lieutenant in December 2008 in the Army Service Corps. He volunteered for the stint in the 53 Rashtriya Rifles and was posted for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. There were mixed reactions to this row. He was praised by Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla and BJP President Amit Shah for his actions which saved lives of protesters, soldiers and election officials. This incident was criticized by Lieutenant General Harcharanjit Singh Panag who said hostage-taking and human shields are a violation of the protocols of the army.
