Le Hoang Hung (1960 - 30, January 2011), a Vietnamese, was working as a reporter for the Nguoi Lao Dong in Tan An, Vietnam covering corruption and crime. It was initially claimed that he died as an act of revenge for some of the stories he had recently written about misconduct in the Mekong Delta region, however, his wife subsequently admitted guilt. Death It was said that an unknown assailant broke into Hung's house in Tan An, Vietnam in the middle of the night. They proceeded to douse the reporter with some sort of chemicals, and He was then set on fire. Hung suffered from severe burns on over 20% of his body. He originally went to Long An General Hospital in southern Long An, but because of the severity of his burns he was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Unfortunately because of the severity of his burns he died on January 30 ten days after his attack. The reporters wife, Tran Thi Lieu told authorities that Hung did in fact receive several threatening text messages before the incident ever happened all from unknown numbers. Initially it was said that Hung was killed for his initial reporting of wrong doing, police thought someone was getting revenge. However on February 20 Hung's wife Tran Thi Lieu confessed to murdering her husband.Police say her motives were linked to family and economic problems. Context These kind of fatal attacks are rare in Vietnam. Most journalist who died in Vietnam were covering the Vietnam War like Larry Burrows, or Dickey Chapelle. The last case was in 1988. The Vietnamese government were going to do everything in there power to make sure Hung's murderer came to justice. Impact Hung was a print reporter for the Nguoi Lao Dong. Shawn Crispin, CPJ's senior Southeast Asia representative said, "The government signaled its commitment to protecting journalists in a media decree earlier this month and until this crime is solved that commitment will have gone unfulfilled."
