Larry P. Thomas

Larry P. Thomas is the Inaugural Director of the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program at American University in Washington, DC.
Education and Career
Larry P. Thomas attended Rowan University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He later earned a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration and a Master of Business Administration from Syracuse University. Thomas has also completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University
Thomas is the Inaugural Director of the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program at American University. Previously, Thomas served as Director of the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program and Associate Director of the Office of Graduate Preparation Programs at Syracuse University.
Accomplishments
* Intermediary with the White House in facilitating Florida State University’s participation in President Clinton’s One America Initiative
* Guided the establishment of the Orange Seeds First-Year Student Leadership Empowerment Program at Syracuse University
* Chaired the 2003 Sponsored Programs Committee of the American College Personnel Association’s Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs
* Completed the Institute for Social Justice Education at the 2003 National Conference on Race and Ethnicity
* Completed the Institute for Multicultural Organizational Development at the 2004 National Conference on Race and Ethnicity
* Established Syracuse University’s “I Have a Dream” Week as a celebration of the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
* Founded the African American Male Congress, the nation’s first undergraduate honor society for African American males
* Golden Key International Honour Society at University of Pennsylvania
* 1998 Senior Vice President for Student Affairs' "Students First" Award at Syracuse University
* Faculty and Staff Inspiration Award at the 2005 Chancellor's Awards for Public Service at Syracuse University
* Inaugural Distinguished Gentleman Award at the 2007 Dimensions Awards at Syracuse University
