Larry Gilhuly

Larry Gilhuly (born March 24, 1952) is an American turfgrass agronomist notable for his 36-year tenure with the USGA Green Section. As Northwest regional agronomist, he provided guidance to golf courses across seven U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. In 2019, he received the Paul Backman Distinguished Service Award from the Western Washington Golf Course Superintendents Association (WWGCSA).
Early life and education
Gilhuly was born on March 24, 1952, in Kelso, Washington. Over his career, he visited more than 1,100 golf courses and traveled nearly two million miles.
He retired in 2019 at age 67 after 36 years of service.
Consulting and advocacy
Post-retirement, he launched Larry Gilhuly Consulting, continuing to champion initiatives such as forward tees, GPS sprayers, and sustainable turf practices.<ref name"search1" /><ref name"search2" />
He also contributed to USGA course consulting efforts to help facilities adapt agronomic and environmental best practices.<ref name="search2" />
Awards
In 2019, Gilhuly received the Paul Backman Distinguished Service Award, WWGCSA’s top honor.<ref name"WWGCSAphoto" /><ref name"WWGCSAaward" />
Personal life
He resides in Washington state. Married to Peggy Gilhuly, they have two children, Ashleigh (b. 1983) and Ryan. Ashleigh played collegiate golf at Washington State University.<ref name"search1" /><ref name"search0" />
Legacy
Gilhuly is widely regarded as a pioneer in Pacific Northwest golf course agronomy, environmental leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for player-friendly course designs. His legacy continues through his consulting and educational contributions.
