In the Albanian culture, last names are very strong and show where and how your family grew up. Many people may not stay in contact with one if they have a last name which they have issues in the past. As many people know, Albanians somehow are related to many other Albanians they are not aware of. A Kosovar from Pristina told me "if you are an Albanian the first thing someone may ask you is "Whats you last name?", you have to make sure that you are not related, otherwise you have an extra person to invite to your weddings" Lajqi is an Albanian name from Kosovo. Its origin is in the mountains of Rugova. Lajqi is a well respected, strong, and loyal family. Many people get this name confused with Lajaji, Laja, Lajjqa. It is very disrespectful for someone to misspell, mispronounce, and confuse. Because they are so respected by many people, they do not have many family rivalries. Lajqi's are a very big family, and are all over the mountains of Rugova and the beautiful cities of Kosovo. They are very specific when it comes to marriage. Like other Muslim families, they are very much into marring someone that is Muslim, it showed their respect to their ancestors, although Lajqi's, about 200 years back were originally Catholics, the war separated Yugoslavia into Muslims and Catholics. A traditions the Lajqi's have at wedding's are usually to have a number amount of men either sit down or join a cicle and dance to the music of the cifteli and tupan, playing the "Valle e Rugoves". Women start to join the dance after the first man has reached the same place he originally started at.
