Kunststoff 23 was a Detroit, Michigan based industrial dance band formed in Dearborn, MI in 1990. The project's members were Jeff Kmet (programming, synthesizers, percussion, vocals) and Dylan Day (programming, synthesizers, percussion, vocals). Band Name The name Kunststoff 23 was chosen for the founding member's love of German electronic music and the erupting industrial dance scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The German word for art (kunst) was combined with the German word for material or substance (stoff), with the addition of the number "23" at the end to signify Day's admiration of the 4AD graphic design partnership known as 23 Envelope, who is known for doing the album artwork of many popular 4AD artists. Beginnings Dylan Day first met Jeff Kmet while working at a movie theater together in Dearborn, Michigan in 1990 at a popular local shopping mall called Fairlane Town Center. The Movies at Fairlane (then owned an operated by the now defunct United Artists Theatre Circuit) operated on the upper and lower level. Kmet was working as a manager at the time, and Day joined shortly thereafter as an usher. Both found that they shared an affinity for electronic and industrial based dance music and soon began working together. Jeff already possessed an electronic keyboard workstation (an Ensoniq VFX), and Dylan soon joined in with his first analog synthesizer (a Roland Juno 106). After spending 1990 and 1991 writing, producing, and performing together, both Dylan and Jeff stopped working together musically when career paths and other interests found them spending less time working in the capacity that Kunststoff 23 required. They remain good friends still today. Dylan formed nympheas in early 2001 when he found himself writing and producing again and found a need to release new material. In homage to his roots with Jeff and Kunststoff 23, he started a record label called "k23" for all nympheas releases. Disoveragraphy No official releases were made, however; several completed songs were regularly performed and released to a close circle of friends. Kunststoff 23 also performed a select collection of cover songs by other electronic artists of the time. Some of the completed original songs by Kunststoff 23 were: The Glass, Envelope 23, Nebular Worm, and Crevice References http://en. .org/wiki/Nympheas_(band)
