Firm History & Practice Kumin Sommers LLP was founded in 2008, when two solo practitioners, Matt Kumin and Stephen Sommers, decided to merge their boutique practices. Partners Matthew Kumin has been a civil rights and general civil litigator in state and federal courts for the past fourteen years. He is also experienced in litigating sexual discrimination and sexual harassment cases. Matt teaches at Hastings College of Law and Golden Gate School of Law in San Francisco when he has the time. He has also taught at several other institutions of higher education, including: Northwestern University School of Law, Santa Clara Law School, Stanford---where he has conducted workshops on political and social issues, and New College of California School of Law. Matt has been admitted to the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern and Central Districts of California, all California state courts, and United States Tax Court. Stephen Sommers has dedicated his career to fighting for justice. After volunteering for the United States Peace Corps in Chad, Africa, Stephen spent a decade in the trenches of the labor movement and working for progress within the larger economic justice movement. Stephen began his career as the Director of Citizen Action of Maryland and Western Pennsylvania, waging political campaigns on behalf of consumers, from 1990 to 1993. As a union organizer from 1993 to 1999, Stephen worked in small towns in the South, negotiating collective bargaining agreements and encouraging mill workers to stand up against the mill owners for respect and dignity. Stephen’s law practice over the past six years has been focused on employment rights. He represents employees and former employees who have been discriminated against, wrongfully terminated, improperly paid, or otherwise unfairly treated. Stephen has been admitted to the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, and Central Districts of California, as well as all California state courts.
