Krusty Dz

Career
Begun in late summer of 2006 after a month-long exchange to Germany through the German American Partnership Program, band members Brian Smith and Madi Becker put together an anti-folk style musical group in their hometown of Canby, Oregon. Soon after forming the Krusty Dz, the two left Canby to move to New York City in hopes of becoming discovered by other artists of the same genre. After a few months, the band reached a point where they were opening for such acts as Kimya Dawson and Jeffrey Lewis as well as several other artists of the New York City anti-folk scene. Despite their on-and-off commitment to the group, the two managed to record an album by the late summer of 2008 titled “Da Craigy Special.” Though it’s not certain to where the name came from, it has been speculated that the name can be attributed to a freestyle walking move with the same name. Though many critics have condemned the recording style of the album, the band doesn’t seem to be too offended. In an interview with the Portland Mercury on August 16, 2008 Smith said, “…look at the name of our band, we’re obviously not about quality.” Despite their criticism, the band stuck together through the end of the album and then eventually split up to form their own bands with limited critical acclaim. After the split however, faces Brian Smith and Madi Becker were painted in a mural at Canby High School in honor of the band at the school they had both attended.
