Founded in march 2007 by Koinup, Srl. Koinup is a social network dedicated to virtual world users. Koinup members can share all they want about their Virtual life. Right now, Koinup features specific sections dedicated to: Second Life, There.com, IMVU, World of Warcraft and few others. But it support all kind of contents related to virtual worlds, without any exception.
Unlike other social networks, Koinup is totally aimed at the emergent scene of non gaming virtual worlds, captained by Second Life
The main purpose of Koinup is to provide users with a suitable space to share experiences, creations and friends they have in virtual environments. Koinup members have their own gallery and can benefit of 1,5Gb of storage space for free.

Media
On Koinup user can share all kind of contents. They can upload photos, videos and other kind of contents. The major part of contents uploaded on Koinup are in world Screenshots created by virtual worlds users, while they are inside virtual environments. Like other websites, as machinima.com and few others, Koinup is a relevant resources for machinima artists, which can share for free their movies.
In order to upload contents on Koinup, users have to be register themselves. Since now, there is no premium membership available

Crosspost
Crosspost is an innovative feature supported by Koinup. It provide users with the chance to upload their contents at the same time in Koinup and other other websites as Flickr and Twitter. Crosspost is an innovative way to help people which have several accounts in social network. It is supported also by other websites, as Blip.tv

Virtual broadcasting
Virtual broadcasting is a feature that allow Koinup users to send contents directly from virtual worlds to their Koinup gallery. Right now, virtual broadcasting works only for Second Life residents

Term
Koinup is a derivation of Koinè. Koinè is a synonym of Lingua franca. Greeks used Koinè to refer to a specific language talked with foreign people and aimed at bring peace and cooperation between other countries. Koinup purpose is to become a sort of common language for people coming from different virtual worlds. The term Koinup refer also to “Coin Op” or Coin operated machine, the first machine fully dedicated to arcade game. So Koinup features an hommage to the first video arcades, where gamers used stay together.

Debate
Koinup takes part in the actual relevant debate on avatar Portability and inter-worlds communication. This debate has two major player in the arena that are Linden Lab and IBM. They recently released an associated press release to inform about their commitment on the creation of standard for inter virtual worlds communication. Koinup is aligned on the same position to make some bridge between different virtual world. Koinup main strategy is to allow people from different virtual worlds to join in the same place, contribute on the common ideas, meet one each other and make friendship.
