Knitting and crochet during the civil war

knitting and crochet is the process of making fabric by interlocking loops. many people used to knit and crochet during the civil war. why? because many people were drafted into the army and many families lost their loved ones and wanted to find a way to help in the civil war. many of the people that did not go to help with nursing got whatever scraps of yarn they had and started to knit them into articles of clothing, the most popular were socks, because the people who had to fight during the winter and rainy seasons had nothing more than to wear shoes without socks or with rags covering their feet. but what was also made was neck-warmers, fingerless gloves, wristlets, and sweaters, and also many more.
there were also many people in the war itself who had to spend much of their free time, if they had any, knitting and crocheting themselves socks and such. because even with all the knitting and crocheting, there was not enough socks to go to all the troops. many kids even got involved in making socks, gloves, ect for the people who risked their lives for the civil war.
