Kinniard (Scottish Gaelic: An Ceann Àrd, "high headland") is another variation in spelling of the surname Kinnaird. History The surname Kinnaird comes from a Norman Nobleman called Radulphus Rufus who received land from King William the Lion (King of Scots) in the Carse of Gowrie. Here is where the original Kinnaird home known as a Keep was constructed around the year 1170 and was used to protect its people from the Highlanders. This Keep more resembles a tower due to its location and design. It was restored toward the end of the 19th Century due to poor upkeep. In 1661 King Charles II of England knighted Sir George Kinnaird for his loyal support and was later given the title Lord Kinnaird of Inchture.
