Kingsmead Community School and the Carnegie Award

For several years now Kingsmead Community School's English department has taken on the responsiblity of the Carnegie Award. This project allows young people to have their own voice and decide which book they think is most deserving of the award.
The students have to read eight page-turning novels before eventually deciding which one is worthy of the award, the nominees are:
CHAINS by Laurie Halse Anderson
As the Revolutionary War begins in America a thirteen year old slave girl named Isabel starts her own fight, a fight for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner Isabel and her sister Ruth are played a cruel hand as they become property of a malicious New York couple, The Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Isabel and Ruth. When Isabel meets slave Curzon, who has ties to the patriots he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of the planned British invasion. Isabel is reluctant at first but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realises her loyalty is available to the bidder who can offer her freedom.
