Kharma 45 are an indie electro rock band from Strabane and Derry, Northern Ireland. Citing such influences as Stone Roses, Muse, The Chemical Brothers and Tool, their songs blend a classic rock line up with synth led dance undertones.
Formation
In 2005 guitarist Peter Doherty met vocalist Glenn Rosborough on a music course. "Kharma" was a word discovered by Doherty and Rosborough whilst playing a word association game on the Internet, and "45" is the duo's initials as numbers, "added up". After recruiting drummer Phil Curran and bassist Shane McDevitt, the band played their first gig in September at Strabane bar Dicey Rileys. Within a few months Kharma 45 were signed to Warner Bros. Records. They relocated to London in 2006, and then to their current base in Liverpool in Spring 2007. Through an intense touring schedule the band increased their profile, playing at festivals such as the V Festival, Reading, Leeds, O2 Wireless, Glastonbury and Oxegen. The band also performed a 'Mini-Ireland' tour at the end of the summer in 2007; setting off playing the Radio 1 stage at the Belfast Tennants Vital festival.
Recordings
Kharma 45's debut single "Where's Your Spirit Man?" was released throughout the UK to buy and download on May 7, 2007. The band's second single, "Come On" was released on August 27, 2007. As part of the 5x5 tour of the UK from September 2007 to January 2008, five different "regional" 12 inch versions of the single were released, each with a different B-side. Their debut album Secondo was due for release in Spring 2008 following a commercial release of the third single "Ecstasy" in February. However this did not materialise. Glenn has left in pursuit of a solo career. Pete Doherty, Shane McDevitt & Phillip Curran have formed a new band (The Logic) with lead singer Laura Edwards from England.
