Katy Carlson, born in Encinitas, CA in 1987, is the founder of a small community movement in Grand Rapids, MI known as "Beat the Streets." The movement seeks to help the homeless in suburbs of Grand Rapids by taking them into small homes, providing food and shelter and by educating such people to give them the ability to procure a job that can get them off of the streets.
This movement has grown to include 17 houses throughout the Grand Rapids area and has procured financial assistance from multiple sources.
In 2008 three other groups, inspired by Katy Carlson and her work, began their own cell groups of "Beat the Streets" in Philadelphia, Boston, and Silver Spring (MD).
