Kate Fitzgerald

Katherine "Kate" Fitzgerald is a fictional character in the novel and subsequent film adaptation My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Kate suffers from the disease acute promyelocytic leukemia after being diagnosed at the age of two. Following her diagnosis, her sister Anna was selected through in vitro fertilization from various embryos before being put into her mother Sara's womb, to be a genetic match donor after her elder brother Jesse tested inappropriate.
She doesn't enjoy her (long) visits to the hospital and just wants a normal life. She enjoys watching soap operas and dancing. When she was 14, she had a brief relationship with a fellow leukemia patient who later dies a few days after they first did "it".
However, in a Washington Post review by Katherine Arie, Kate is described to be "as weak and wispy on the page as she's supposed to be in life."
Plot
Anna has undergone numerous surgeries to donate her blood, bone marrow and more for her sister. When it is discovered that Kate needs one of Anna's kidneys, Anna sues her parents for the rights to her own body. This will mean that Kate will no longer receive her sister's tissues. Without a kidney donor, Kate will most likely die soon because of organ failure.
Toward the end, it is discovered that Kate was the one who initiated the lawsuit. In the film adaptation, after Kate has died in the hospital with her mother by her side she hopes to go to heaven and be able to see Taylor by her side to live together
In the novel, Anna is involved in a car crash, leaving her brain dead. Cambell, having been appointed Anna's medical guardian, decides to donate Anna's kidneys to Kate. Kate survives and, as revealed in the epilogue, becomes a ballet instructor.
In the film epilogue, Anna describes how their family members deal with Kate's death in their both positive and negative ways.
Family
Kate is often the one who receives the most attention in the family. Jesse describes Anna as the peacemaker amid his arsons and Kate's illness. children. During the lawsuit when Anna and her parents are on opposing sides, Brian takes Anna to live in his fireman dorm.
In the the role Kate was portrayed by Sofia Vassilieva.
