Kashpoint

Kashpoint was an influential fashionable club night taking place in London, UK focusing on music, art, and style. Started by Matthew Glamorre in 2002 on a boat moored opposite the London Eye, Kashpoint quickly became one of London's most popular underground art events. Matthew Glamorre was supported by musician Bishi and DJ Jim Warboy in running the night. When Jim Warboy left to start his own night, aspiring London fashion designer Stefán stepped up to manage the night. Kashpoint attracted a crowd of celebrities to students to pop stars, artists to musicians and professionals to self-made fashion designers. And it is generally viewed as restarting the idea of dressed up nights in London.

Towards the end of 2006, Kashpoint went weekly, with parties being held every Friday at the Burlington Club in Mayfair. The weekly setup didn't, however, prove as successful as its monthly counterpart and the club went into indefinite hiatus soon thereafter.

Electro
Often linked with the British electroclash and electronic dance scene, Kashpoint championed a low-fi homemade sound - playing mainly Glitch Core, Electronic Rock, Tiger 6 and Eurotrash. Kashpoint also played somemusic from other genres in the musical spectrum, and was known as an outlet for self-made fashion and individual art expression. The club promoted its philosophy of self-expression through a strict dress code (no look - no luck), with crowds dressed in wild, eccentric and avant-garde outfits at each of its themed parties.

Kashpoint events took place at different venues around London throughout the year. A special edition of the club night, Kashpoint Live, focused on live acts, performance art and video installations by up-and-coming artists, musicians and performers, including Misty Woods's electrotrash band Ju Ju Babies. These took place in venues such as London's KoKo and Area.

Kashpoint also spawned its own record label, Kashpoint Records, which promotes artists such as Bishi, Cantankerous, DJ Hair Explosion and Silence is Sexy. In 2004 a compilation album of artists from the club was voted best underground album 2004 by Time Out, and was championed by people like Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters.

Fashion
Kashpoint attracted some of the original styles setters of the Blitz Kids and New Romantic scene of the 1980's and took up the creative lead from the fashion renegades and artists that used to frequent such clubs as Kinky Gerlinky in the early 1990's and Daisy Chain in the late 80's before that. Leigh Bowery was a regular at The Daisy Chain and his iconic style has influenced Kashpointers to this day. A special night featuring Minty was held in commemoration in 2006. Almost everyone who attended Kashpoint was an extablished artist, performer fashion designer or musician in their own right. It is an underground club for the creative elite

Kashpoint and its party goers have frequently been in worldwide fashion magazine like i-D, Dazed & Confused and Pop as well international Vogue. Two of the most renowned designers to have emerged from Kashpoint are Gareth Pugh and Casette Playa, both of whom now receive wide critical acclaim and show at London Fashion Week. Gareth Pugh showed his first collection at the nightclub.

Many magazines discussed the buzz surrounding Kashpoint. British Vogue claimed "All eyes are on Kash Point for it is from here the next Galliano or McQueen will spring". Paper Magazine did a photoshoot at the club for its September 2006 issue. New York magazine Gazelland focused its entire Summer 2007 "Skin" issue on the Kashpoint kids.

Kashpoints future
In 2008 Kashpoint is resurrected on an occasional basis to mark special events. it remains one of the most originally stylish and underground scene nights in London. a polysexual mish mash of invention and experimentation. The August 2008 Kashpoint at Moonlighting in Greek Street marks the 40th birthday of its founder Matthew Glamorre. Getting in, as ever, depends on making a cretive effort with your outfit and not buying something off the peg!
