Karadi Madasamy

Karadi Madan or Kariyadi Madan, though often conflated with Sudalai Madan, has a somewhat different story from him. Karadi Madan is said to be Takka Raja, and his story is a regional variant of the well-known tale of Daksha's sacrifice and its plunder by Veerabhathran. There are some strong differences between the classical Sanskrit tale and the folk-story popular in South India, but the events in both follow the same narrative trajectory.
In the local version current in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Takka Raja is said to have pleased the gods and thus was given the blessing of having Goddess Shakthi Devi incarnate as his daughter. When his daughter Shakthi came of age, Takka Raja wanted to marry her off to an arranged partner, but instead she eloped with Siva.
Takka Raja became furious at this. He later decided to punish Devi and Siva by conducting a huge sacrifice, the end of which was to cause tremendous heat. So with this magical power, Takka furiously heated up Mount Kailasa, where the happy couple reside. The heat became unbearable, and Devi sent both Vinayaka and Muruga, her divine children, to reason with her father. But Takka was stubborn and unyielding.
At this point Siva created lord Veerabathran from a drop of his sweat. In some regional variants, Devi creates Veerabhathran in the same way. Veerabhathran goes and fights Takka, eventually cutting off his head and throwing it in the sacrificial fire. In the Tamil cycle of legends surrounding goddess Ankalaparameshwari, it is said that Shakthi in the form of Bhadrakaali went to fight Takka Raja.
In any case, Takka had been decapitiated. But out of pity, Siva decided to revive him. He replaced Takka Raja's head with that of a goat. thus still in some part of southern Tamil Nadu we can see a god with a goat head, he is called as thalavai madan. Lord shiva then instructed Takka to go to Earth and do penance to cleanse himself of the sin of having attempted to burn Kailasa. Takka Raja acknowledged Siva and Devi with reverence, repented his aggression and proceeded to Earth.
On Earth, Takkan traveled from one sacred place to another, presenting his offerings to the gods of various temples. He meditated in the forest, and demonstrated kindness to all. Wherever he found people who needed help, he would use his divine energy to serve them. He protected the weak against the oppressive, and changed people for the better. Siva was pleased with the turn-around in Takka's heart, and happily endowed him with all sorts of wonderful powers.
Takka Rajan continued his journey on Earth, and finally met lord Shastha by Shastha's riverside shrine. Takkan worshiped Shasthappan with an overflowing heart. Lord Shastha was pleased both by Takka's devotion and by the good work he did for others. He decided that he will keep Takkan near him as the kaval (guard) of the shrine, and arranged for his worship. Because Takka Raja took his seat near the river bank, he is called Kariyadi Madan or karadi madan.
