Jumunjy is a pro-nature and recycling movement located in Thailand on Koh Phangan Island. The initiators of the project were Tristan Hunt and Pansa Takul, who started it in February 2004. Since then the community around the project grew to over a thousand people, with members from Thailand and many foreign countries, trying to save and secure the island of Koh Phangan and its beaches as well as its maritime surroundings. The logo was hand drawn B=by Tristan Hunt and reproduced by Nordin Storms, a Malaysian graphic designer. It should symbolize a relation to nature and its treasures. Philosophy Jumunjy is a way of thinking and stands for a fusion between civilization and nature, and is a recycling- and also a timeless hand built project, without the use of power tools. The concept is to create a unique experience in every possible way with things we have in overflow and others we begin to lose, without the need of 'new technology', remembering people what wonderful world we live in and that we don't need to create a new one. A 'Robinson Crusoe' feeling which leads 'back to the basics' instead of alltime forward to an uncertain goal. says Mr. Tristan Hunt. Execution The Concept of Jumunjy brought together a collage of natural and recyclable products collected from the islands: -Beach: Driftwood, Rope, Nets, Fishing lines, Lighters, Flip Flops, Flotation Devices, Fishing Nets Removed from Local Coral Reefs and all manner of washed up beach debris. Done by Jergen Drexler from 'The Fun Factory Dive School' on Koh Phangan. -Land: Bottles, Glass, Old Furniture, Paintings, Signs, Lighting, Metal Work, Fabric, in general the contents of the islands road sides and dumps. Over 2000 Beer bottles cleared from Had Rin beach after The Full Moon Party and many more things brought by civilization. Birth April 13, 2004 marks literally the Birthday of Jumunjy, with its first opening. Coincidentally the same day as Thailand's Songkran Water Festival and new year. The Full completed Project took 7 months from February 2004 until its Grand opening on August 2, 2004. Once started the 'idea' of Jumunjy found loads of fans, that led to rising contributions to the growing community of Jumunjy. The place called Jumunjy is ever evolving, as like minded designers, artists & musicians leave their mark. Doing its part in reminding people to reduce, reuse and recycle, and finding overwhelming acceptance along that way.
