July 2022 Paysandú Derecho
|
On the morning of the 11th of July 2022, a sudden derecho hit the Uruguayan river city of Paysandú, damaging around 11.000 houses and leaving more than 30 people injured. Around 300 calls were made to the local fire stations that morning. Event Around 7:00 AM, the city was immersed in a thunderstorm when, suddenly, winds picked up speeds to around 120 km/h. It is estimated that around 400 trees were ripped up from their roots or torn apart that morning. Furthermore, more than 30.000 residents suffered power outages. Such an event was unprecedented in the city and in the region, only comparable to the 2016 Dolores tornado. For this reason, it took experts days to come to a consensus on what meteorological phenomenon had actually occurred in the event. A new newspaper building, costing about 1.2 million US dollars, was lost in the storm's pathway. Several radio antennas were also destroyed. Around a thousand roofs were severely damaged or blown off.<ref name"observa"/><ref name"ladiaria"/> This is mostly because, in Uruguay (a country not used to natural disasters of nearly any type), while houses are mostly made out of brick, roofs sometimes consist of sheet metal. Political reactions The next day, the country's president went to the city to gather information on the state of affairs and seek measures to repair losses suffered that day.<ref name="ladiaria"/>
