Julius West Middle School

Julius West Middle School is a public school for students in grades 6, 7 and 8 located in Rockville, Maryland. The school was established in 1961 as West Rockville Junior High. In 1963, the school changed names to Julius West to honor local farmer and benefactor of education, Mr. Julius West. In 1978, Julius West became a middle school. Students who attend Julius West previously attended Beall Elementary, College Gardens Elementary, Richie Park Elementary, Twinbrook Elementary, and the now closed Woodley Gardens Elementary
Middle Years Programme
In July 2003, Julius West officially became an International Baccalaureate World School when it was allowed to implement the Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum. This program is mandatory to all students who attend Julius West.
The MYP stresses "life long learning," "critical thinking," and "responsible global citizenship." It is a five-year program designed for students in grades 6-10. The program provides MYP classes to any Julius West student. After 8th grade, students attend Richard Montgomery High School, where they can earn a MYP diploma upon completion of the program in 10th grade.
In 11th grade, there are 25 spots available to enter the IB program. The IB program includes Honors/AP courses and a College/Career Preparatory path that teaches skills for entering into the workforce or college.
Demographics
As of the 2009-2010 school year, the student body of 961 students is 36.3% White, 22.9% Hispanic, 21.0% Asian, 19.5% African American (non-Hispanic), and 0.3% American Indian.
As of the 2008-2009 school year, 28.7% of the students receive free/reduced price lunches and 10.2% are in the ESOL program.

Julius West has five "areas of interaction":

*Community and Service - "Doing something good without getting paid"
*Health & Social Education - "Making good choices for your mind and your body"
*Environment - "Taking care of our world today and keeping it fit for the future"
*Homo Faber (Latin for Man the Maker) - "Creating things that can impact the world"
Recently implemented was the ROAR program, which stands for Responsibility, Organization, Achievement and Respect. Students can earn "JW Dough" by showing ROAR. They can use two Dough as 25 cents at the school store or 10 doughs for a dance ticket.
