Basic Information Josephine McCarthy is the nom de plume of Josephine Littlejohn, a British writer and ceremonial magician. She was born in Bradford, United Kingdom.. She started teaching in 1993, and founded Quareia, "a new school of magic for the 21st Century", with Frater Acher in 2014. She lives in Dartmoor National Park, Devon with her husband, magical artist Stuart Littlejohn. Occult Career Josephine conducted magical training workshops and lectures across the USA from 1993 to 2007, and spoke at various conferences on occult subject matters, more recently speaking at British Occult Conferences in Glastonbury and London. She began writing in 1999 while living in the USA, her first few books being esoteric fiction. Her first non-fiction occult book was ‘The Magical Training of the Initiate’ written under her maiden name and published by esoteric publishers ‘Sun Chalice Books’ USA, in 2005. On returning to the UK in 2008 She wrote a further eight nonfiction occult books which started to bring her work to the attention of a wider occult magical audience. Her work is known for its down to earth, detailed and original approach to the esoteric and occult mysteries: “She is revolutionizing esoteric teaching with her honesty, courage, and dedication to the work” - Greg Kaminsky Occult of Personality. In 2011 she came into contact with Frater Acher, a German occultist and writer, and the two very different magicians struck up a working friendship. As a result of their long distance conversations on the state of magic, and of magical training in the twenty first century, they decided it was necessary to establish a magical training school that would present training in a very different way, and without any paywall. This became known as Quareia. Published Works Josephine’s first published work was esoteric fiction and was published under her then married name of Stewart. In 2005 she began working with Coleston Brown of Sun Chalice Books in the USA and published three titles under her maiden name of Dunne. Upon returning to the UK she began writing under the nom de plume of Josephine McCarthy.
