Jonathan Trichter

Jonathan A. Trichter is an American financier and political consultant who was a candidate in the 2018 New York State Comptroller election. Despite being registered as a Democrat, he was nominated by the New York State Republican and Conservative parties as their candidate. He lost the election to incumbent Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, a Democrat, who earned just shy of 67% of the vote compared to Trichter's 31.3%.
Career
Trichter worked as an investment banker for J.P. Morgan, and managed a digital media startup. He was an adjunct professor at Fordham University. He also ran a special needs school in New York City and opened Hubbard Day, a for-profit school in Greenwich.
In 2021, Trichter and a group of investors which included Howard Wolfson prevented the closure of Astor Hair, a barbershop he had gone to for many years in Manhattan's East Village notable for cutting the hair of many celebrities, including Andy Warhol, Robert De Niro, and Bill de Blasio.
Political career
In 2010, Trichter worked as a policy director for the campaign of Harry Wilson during the 2010 New York State Comptroller election, where Wilson lost to DiNapoli.
Even though Trichter was a registered Democrat, he was nominated by the New York State Republican Party as their candidate for New York State Comptroller in 2018. In debates, he steered clear of cultural issues such as the death penalty and whether or not he would vote for Donald Trump in 2020, saying that those issues had "nothing to do with the comptroller's office". Leading up to the election, incumbent Thomas DiNapoli held a large lead in polling over Trichter. Trichter ultimately earned just under 1.9 million votes, falling short of DiNapoli's total of just over 4 million, a margin of about 35 percent.
