John Walton Hamp

John Walton Hamp LRCPS LM LSA JP (7 August 1852—28 August 1925), served as Mayor of Wolverhampton, November 1900—1901.
Medicine
Hamp studied at the first provincial teaching hospital in England, Queen's College, Birmingham and was elected member of the British Medical Association in 1877. He was appointed houseman at Queen's Hospital, Birmingham. Later he established a general practice in Wolverhampton, moving to larger premises at Holly House, Penn Road, as his practice, and his family, grew.
Politics
Hamp was elected to the town council in 1884, and represented St John's Ward. He served as the 47th Mayor of Wolverhampton for the part year, November 1900-1901. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP), the following year, and was made an Alderman.
Other appointments
He was appointed a Fellow of the Obstetrical Society of Edinburgh and also the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh. He was chairman of the South Staffordshire Permanent Building Society.
Family
Born in Wolverhampton 7 August 1852, Hamp was the son of John Hamp, pharmaceutical chemist. He married Elizabeth Lydia Johnson in 1897 and they had two children. He died in Wolverhampton on the 28 August 1925. In 1926, a tablet in his memory was consecrated in St Paul's Church, Wolverhampton.
