D. John Samuel Ponnusamy is an Old Testament Scholar who currently is the President of the scholarly Society for Biblical Studies in India, a Learned society, incorporating Biblical Scholars of the Protestant, Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Charismatic traditions. Ponnusamy has knowledge of Tamil and English apart from the Biblical languages Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. The Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary, Madurai has John Samuel Ponnusamy on its faculty since 1989. Studies Ponnusamy obtained a post-graduate degree from the United Theological College, Bengaluru when the Old Testament Expert Scholar E. C. John was still teaching in the College. Ponnusamy studied in the College during the academic years 1987 to 1989 and as part of the requirements, he submitted a thesis titled The social and political implications of the Sinai Covenant tradition and the Davidic Covenant tradition in the history of Israel during the monarchy From 1989, he began teaching Old Testament at the Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary, Madurai. During the Principalship of Kambar ManickamJohn Samuel was accorded study leave to enable him to pursue doctoral studies. Ponnusamy then proceeded to the University of Lancaster, Lancaster where he researched in Old Testament, supervised by John F. A. Sawyer. While in England Ponnusamy was offered a Lecturership in the Northern College (United Reformed Church) in Manchester. In 2008, he got his doctoral dissertation titled Abraham and Issac in Interfaith Perspectives published by the ISPCK, New Delhi.
