The ten escaped POWs, assisted by two Filipino convicts, were the first to break the news of the infamous Bataan Death March, and other atrocities committed by the Japanese, to the world.
Lukacs has written on a variety of subjects, usually on military history or sports history, including a bizarre football game played on the site of the nuclear blast that ended World War II, The Atom Bowl.<ref name=NYT/>
