John Cauman is an art historian who specializes in writing about the art of Henri Matisse. He attended Columbia College (1966-68) and transferred to Bennington College where he earned a B.A. degree in Literature in 1971. He did graduate work at Hunter College, where he received an M.A. Degree in Art History and earned a Ph.D. in Art History from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2000. His dissertation was entitled "Matisse and America, 1905-1933." He is the author of numerous articles and exhibition catalogs, most notably Matisse and American Art, a show that he co-curated at the Montclair Art Museum in 2017. More recently, he was the author of Matisse in 50 Works and Van Gogh in 50 Works, both Pavilion Books, London, 2019.
