Johanna Masko (née Juby) is an American-Canadian quilt designer and fiber artist. She is known for modern quilting designs inspired by vintage objects and an emphasis on technique. Early life Born in southeastern Michigan, she attended the University of Michigan School of Art and Design where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and the University of Toronto from which she received a Bachelor of Education. She has been sewing since childhood and comes from a long line of creative artists in her family, including painters and clothing makers. Career She has exhibited and taught at the Modern Quilt Guild's international QuiltCon, Quilt Xtravaganza (QuiltX), Creative Sewing Festival, Silo Weavers for Contemporary Quilts Show, Johanna's style has been said to be a hybrid between traditional and modern quilts. and she has an array of simple designs that make her work highly accessible. Her Donuts pattern has been used by many online crafts bloggers. She has also influenced and mentored other textile artists, including Libs Elliot. At QuiltX she presented Wireless, a quilt which features zigzag patterns representing radio waves and electrical currents, and the cartoon figure Reddy Kilowatt. For the <nowiki/>s exhibit "Fashion Victims: Pleasures and Perils of Dress in the 19th Century," she conducted a workshop on needlepoint. She also works in millinery, handbag design, paper arts, including quilling and lithography. Awards She is a three time winner of the prestigious National Juried Show Award of the Canadian Quilters Association (CQA), winning first place in 2008 for Downriver Industrial.
