Joey Sweeney is the owner of Philebrity, a popular weblog focused on Philadelphia arts, entertainment, culture and gossip. Launched in 2004, Philebrity is funded primarily through advertising and events. Most of the posts on the site are from Sweeney, who updates three to six times on weekdays. In March 2008, Sweeney launched a food-focused spinoff from Philebrity called Phoodie. Another spinoff, video podcast-focused Philebrity.TV, has floundered. In February 2007, Sweeney and his then-girlfriend and Philebrity Managing Editor Ruth Carpenter were criticized for being featured in a high-profile advertisement for the Nissan Infiniti G in Philadelphia magazine. Sweeney regularly uses Philebrity as a platform to criticize others, most notably other members of the Philadelphia media, including Steven Wells, a staff writer at Philadelphia Weekly. Between March 1997 and June 2003 Sweeney was a columnist at Philly Weekly, before leaving to pursue a music career as frontman for The Trouble with Sweeney. Between 1990 and 1994, Sweeney was a member of The Barnabys. He also released a solo album in 1995 titled Heartache Baseball.
