Joan Bergere

Joan Bergere (born 1921) was a member of the Cole Brothers - Clyde Beatty Circus who was burned in a dressing room
at the Hippodrome Theatre on the night of April 1, 1937. The 16-year-old was a member of the Allen K. Foster girls troupe. She received first degree burns on both legs after her tulle netting ballet skirt was ignited by the flame of an eyelash beading candle. Bergere was
saved by Joyce Cooke, another member of the troupe, who wrapped the burning girl in a blanket.
She was treated by a theater physician and continued with her performance. The accident occurred while the two young women were seated at a dressing table. Bergere was a resident of 3,495 .
