VIDEOS https://www.youtube.com/watch?featureplayer_embedded&vXSCBCew7my4 EARLY CAREER Before Salsa was even a word and before talented Tito Puente, Sheila E and The Escovedo Family were around, It was a band called Jo and the Latin Boys. Jo Gandimbas born in 1917 a year older than Cachao Lopez started his band in 1937 and went to Paris. The Band would be disrupted by the war there until 1945. The band then resumed to the mid 50's. Considered some of the most creative, innovative and avant-garde Mambo/Samba/Chacha band of their time with Chano Pozo and Perez Prado by famous Trumpet Player Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Cab Calloway and many others. Dizzy Gillespie played many times with Jo and the Latin Boys and simply loved the band referring to Jo as his "Be Bop sambas". Jo and the Latin Boys influenced Tito Puente and his musicians like Pedro Ortiz and many others. The band received deep recognition from Xavier Cugat. They performed with international stars Like Yma Sumac, Maurice Chevalier, Josephine Baker etc. Jo and the Latin boys was the original and the very first band to introduce Mambo and Samba in Europe at the famous and prestigious "Ambassadeurs of Paris" in 1948. Few years after they introduced Cha Cha Cha in Europe in Paris. ENDING CAREER Starting with a very strong international success and many radios interview and musical retransmissions Jo and Graziella his wife also part of the band voluntarily and abruptly disappeared from the limelight in the mid 50's. They refused any Tv or Radio interviews. They firmly demanded their music will never be played again anywhere in the world. All commercial release would be instantly removed from sales. They never returned to the music business and never cared for it afterwards. A few American and Cuban bands such as Oscar Calle & Cub Boys or The Ramblers and few others covered some of their songs but without the original success of Jo and Graziella and the Latin boys. None could reproduce the chemistry and fantastic energy of this live band. Songs recorded on Record Label: Decca May 18 2013 was the first time ever anywhere in the world these songs are released publicly since 1955. These songs were made in the late 40's and then re-recorded by Decca in 1954 with 25 musicians. Recording was live (the only way then) with only one rehearsal.
