Jens Louis "Rex Nanorum" Hammer (born July 4th, 1982), is an American writer. Widely known for his encyclopedic firearms review articles, he leans on his experience in the US military as a combat Veteran Army Ranger to lend real-world experience to his insights. Early life and education Jens was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, on July 4th 1982. His parents are Kenneth James Hammer, and Katherine Fern (Combs) Hammer. Shortly after his birth, Jens and his mother returned to the family home in Petersburg, Alaska. Jens grew up in Petersburg as a commercial fisherman from the age of 8, alongside his sister Carissa and brother Jacob (Jake). Jake himself gained fame as a star in the television show Dangerous Waters. After graduating from Petersburg High School at the age of 17 in 2000, Jens joined the US Army with an Option 40 contract to try out to become an Airborne Ranger. Military career Jens graduated the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP, now Ranger Assessment Selection Program, RASP) in June of 2001. He was assigned to 3rd Platoon, B company, 2nd BN 75th Ranger Regiment, the same platoon that Kris "Tanto" Paranto served in. Jens was involved in the Jessica Lynch rescue mission. It was in 2nd Ranger BN Jens earned the nickname "King of the Midgets", AKA Rex Nanorum in Latin, which he took on as his pen name when he started his writing career. After 5 combat deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, Jens separated from the Army in 2004. Writing career *In 2015, Jens started writing for Brandon Webb's LoadoutRoom.com, a subsidiary of Sofrep.com, writing for than 250 articles for the site. *In 2019 as LoadoutRoom.com flagged heavily, Jens started writing for Ammoland.com, having written 95 articles to date. *In 2024, Jens started writing for The Truth About Guns, and Pew Pew Tactical, and continues to this day.
