Jennifer Therese "Jen" Richer (born December 12, 1983) is an American journalist who became well known as the web reporter and news coordinator for WMAL in Washington DC and was a member of the team that helped the station earn the NAB Marconi Award in 2008. In this role, Jen is charged with putting the news you hear on the radio on the internet - not only in text form, but with a growing library of audio and video as well. In addition to covering landmark stories like the Presidential election in 2008 and local stories for the station, she also created and contributes to 630wmal.com's Street Talk reports.
Background Richer was born in San Diego, California, the eldest daughter of Matthew, a construction superintendent, and Elizabeth Richer, a public school nurse. Richer was raised Catholic through the influence of her maternal grandmother Beverly Benson. She has three younger siblings, Carlisle Richer, Benjamin Richer, and Kyle Richer.
Richer attended San Diego public schools: Mt. Vernon Elementary and Marvin Elementary, Lewis Middle School and . While attending Patrick Henry, she was the first Caucasian to join the Patrick Henry High Steppers, a predominantly African-American step team, helping to challenge and break down racial stereotypes on campus.
George Washington University
In 2002 she left California to study International Affairs and Art History at the George Washington University in Washington DC.
While attending she joined the Sigma Kappa Sorority, serving as historian, recording secretary, and TriangleCorrespondent over the course of her four years in attendance. In her senior year, Richer was elected to serve as vice president of alumnae relations. During her term, the chapter celebrated its 100th year on campus. To commemorate this event Richer organized the centennial conference drawing attendance from all over the world. With more than 300 sisters in attendance, the event drew media attention.
In 2003, she earned a coveted position as host on one the top rated talk shows for WRGW, Sex Lies and Pink Cashmere. Hosting from 2003-2006 the show consistently ranked as one of the most listened to programs during it's airing. In her final year at GW, she served as director of promotions at the radio station.
Career Upon graduation she was signed onto the WMAL News Team where she assists in coordinating the newsroom while spearheading the new media department. She is also the web reporter for the station and assists in promotions. She is also a founding member of the GW and Washington DC chapter of AWRT American Women Radio and Television.
Activities Richer has spearheaded the DC Sigma Kappa Alumnae group which in its few short months of creation, has over 200 members. She serves as Vice President of Membership.
